Parenting Child Care Rwanda (PCCR), funded by ChorugUsan for Children and in collaboration with Ngoma District, supported the renovation and upgrading of Nyinya Community-Based ECD to provide children from the surrounding community with a safe, child-friendly, and stimulating learning environment. The Community-Based ECD had previously been operating in a two-room facility that did not meet the required standards for quality Early Childhood Development services. Recognising the importance of quality early learning and a safe environment for children, PCCR and ChirogUsan in partnership with Ngoma District, undertook the renovation and upgrading of the facility to ensure that it is better equipped to meet children’s developmental, learning, and care needs.
The intervention included the construction of two standardised classrooms, one office, one kitchen, four toilets-including one toilet accessible to children with disabilities-a wired security fence, and a rainwater harvesting system. The water harvesting system collects water in two tanks, each with a capacity of 5,000 litres, providing a total storage capacity of 10,000 litres.
PCCR and ChirogUsan for children also renovated the existing building that had originally been constructed by parents in the community. The renovated facility includes one classroom and a library, further strengthening the learning environment and providing children with access to early literacy resources.
Following completion of the works, Nyinya Community-Based ECD is now ready to accommodate up to 108 children, supported by three permanent teachers, caregivers and other supporting staff. The improved infrastructure provides a safer, more appropriate and more supportive environment for children to learn, play and develop.
The community has also demonstrated its commitment to sustaining the supported ECD centre and maintaining the improvements made through the intervention. To further strengthen the quality and sustainability of the centre, the newly recruited staff will need to receive appropriate training, while parents and the wider community will be sensitised on parenting education and their role in supporting children's development.

Looking Ahead
The completion of Nyinya Community-Based ECD represents an important investment in the future of children and the wider community. The next phase will focus on training the new ECD staff and strengthening parenting education and community engagement to ensure that the improved infrastructure is matched by quality care, learning and sustainable community ownership.
